Choosing a Ring
Ideally your engagement ring should be the same gold weight as your wedding band. If you have a 10-karat band sitting beside one of 18 Karats, they are going to rub and wear away at different rates. Similarly, a white gold ring beside a platinum ring is not a good idea because the harder platinum ring will wear away at the softer one.
When choosing a ring, the professionals recommend that you check these four elements.
Cut - round tends to be the most popular, but it is important to consider how the shape reflects the light.
Colour - the whiter the better, usually, although this depends on whether you will be setting the stone in yellow or white gold.
Clarity - the clearer the better.
Carat - this depends on budget, so ask to see as many samples as possible. The tiniest stone is usually 0.25 of a carat. A 4-carat stone would be of the Elizabeth Taylor proportions!
Be practical about choosing an engagement ring. If your job is fairly manual - i.e. if you are a hairdresser, nurse or chef - a low setting such as flush, channel or bezel (where the ring surrounds the diamond) is less likely to catch or get damaged than a gem in a raised setting.
