‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Wedding Finales That Preceded Season 17’s Big Event

The preview for the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 finale, “Someone Saved My Life Tonight,” revealed that Maggie and Winston are tying the knot. This isn’t the first time the hit medical drama has used a big event like this for the last episode of the season. Here’s a look back at the previous Grey’s Anatomy wedding finales.

Season 3 ‘Didn’t We Almost Have It All’

Most early seasons of Grey’s Anatomy ended with a tragic cliffhanger. In Season 3, there was a disaster. But not the same kind that usually occurred. Amid surgical miracles and medical decisions, Cristina and Burke were set to marry in the first big Grey’s wedding.

However, both parties had doubts. Cristina, who doesn’t consider herself much for weddings to begin with, faces hurdles surrounding the ceremony all day. But though she’s the one who panics, it’s Burke who calls off their wedding and their relationship as a whole.

Season 11 ‘You’re My Home’

Over the next several years, other Grey’s Anatomy weddings were featured. But it wasn’t until season 11 that one took the season finale spot. However, much of the episode’s focus is on Meredith’s continued recovery after Derek’s death. (Plus, tying up a few other loose ends from the season.)

Aside from that, Richard and Catherine work to overcome the differences that led to them postponing their wedding in the previous episode. Eventually, Meredith helps them get past it. They have a small wedding and a reception surrounded by their closest friends.

Grey’s Anatomy provided back-to-back wedding finales with seasons 11 and 12. In the latter, Amelia and Owen get married after their romance escalated throughout the season. But as with any Grey’s wedding, Amelia faced doubts leading up to their ceremony, though she went through with it in the end.

However, this episode is perhaps better remembered for what happened outside the wedding. Alex doesn’t understand why Jo doesn’t want to marry him. He then walks in on her with DeLuca and hits him repeatedly, leading to Alex’s arrest. The wedding continues into the season 13 premiere.

Season 14 ‘All of Me’

The most recent Grey’s Anatomy wedding finale took place in season 14. And it featured a bait-and-switch of sorts. Alex and Jo, having worked through their problems, decide to get married. But their big day brings challenge after challenge, and the couple eventually calls off their wedding.

But with some of the Grey Sloan Memorial staff in attendance, another couple decides to take on the ceremony as their own. April, who recently rekindled her relationship with her ex, Matthew, uses the late arrival of the officiant to get married, marking a perfect sendoff for her character.
