Tuesday marks the year after George Floyd’s death, which triggered months of national protests focused on new debates on organized racism and police reform.
Washington — President Joe Biden welcomes George Floyd’s family at the White House on Tuesday to commemorate the first anniversary of his death by a white Minneapolis police officer.
White House spokesman Jen Psaki said Friday that the president would celebrate Floyd’s death anniversary, but did not provide further details about his plans.
Floyd died on May 25, 2020, after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe after kneeling on his neck for more than nine minutes. His death triggered months of national protests focused on systematic racism, and a new debate over police reform in Chauvin, USA, last month on multiple charges resulting from Floyd’s death. Convicted.
But Biden’s plan to host Floyd’s family comes as a discussion focused on a police reform bill named after Floyd— George Floyd Justice in Police Law — I’m stuck at Capitol Hill. Biden had previously set the anniversary of Floyd’s death as the deadline for passing the bill, leaving much of the negotiations to Capitol Hill lawmakers, but the bill hasn’t moved much in recent weeks.
Saki said on Friday that the White House was “in close contact” with negotiators and “they feel they are still making progress” but will pass the bill by Biden’s deadline. Admitted that it was “unlikely”.
George Floyd Justice in Police Law bans strangulation by federal officials, ends the limited immunity to law enforcement in civil lawsuits, and creates national police standards to increase accountability. It passed the House of Representatives in March, but faces a much tougher path in the evenly divided Senate, where Republicans have opposed efforts to abolish limited immunity.
