Jamie Lee has a very different approach to this kind of show.
From home renovations to wedding planning, there are many lifestyle reality shows that are so much fun to tune into. While some viewers were uncertain about Marriage or Mortgage, Love Is Blind has been a huge success with a few couples still happily married today. Cameron and Lauren have a YouTube channel and fans love keeping up with them.
Netflix is back with another awesome wedding reality show called The Wedding Coach. The first season has six episodes and comedian Jamie Lee helps couples get ready for their big day. Her approach is unique and different, so let’s take a look at what the show is like.
Forget Perfection
The wedding industry is huge and there can be pressure to have a day that looks amazing on social media. People often hear about celebrity weddings like Jay Z and Beyonce’s, and it can be easy to get lost in the planning and feel like it’s not even fun anymore.
Tuning into The Wedding Coach means hearing Jamie Lee say one very interesting thing: that having a perfect wedding might be the aim of the industry, but it’s not realistic. She shares that she had a stressful time planning her own big day, and she wants to help people have a fun wedding without worrying too much.

Jamie Lee shared that she wants to help couples since she has wedding planning experience. In an interview with E! News, Lee said, “I don’t even know if I consider myself to be a wedding guru. I guess that’s kind of the whole point is that to be a ‘guru’ in the wedding space it really just means being reliable, being honest and having gone through a wedding yourself.”
Lee continued, “I think that sort of added up to me feeling qualified enough to have some strong opinions on how to have a wedding, how to cope with the stress of a wedding and also, lots of opinions on sort of, the racket of the wedding industry itself.”
The idea of not looking for a flawless wedding day definitely sets The Wedding Coach apart. Fans of reality TV are used to seeing a mad dash to plan in just a few days, and everyone involved is often crying and stressed out, wondering if it’s possible to get it all done. On this show, Jamie Lee helps couples calm down and find happiness and peace.
This approach makes a lot of sense and the couples in the show’s six episodes definitely seem happy and relieved to be working with Jamie Lee. In the episode featuring Ben and Bree’s Nigerian wedding, Jamie Lee arranged a “support group” for Bree and other people who were about to get married. They all felt better as they chatted about how stressed they were.
Finding The Comedy
Since Jamie Lee is a comedian, she asked friends in the same industry to help her on the show, and this sets it apart as well.
Each episode finds Jamie Lee teaming up with one comedian: Alesha Renee, Mamrie Hart, Matteo Lane, Punkie Johnson, Jon Gabrus, and Fortune Feimster.
The first episode, called “Ms. Behaving,” saw Erin and Travis planning a wedding from another city, and there were many funny moments. Jamie Lee set up a fun bachelorette party for Erin and Erin’s sister had a bit too much fun. Then there was the couple’s wish to take a canoe ride to the ceremony instead of walking down a traditional aisle. That made everyone laugh quite a bit, as Erin didn’t want to fall into the water and ruin her dress.
Jamie Lee shared that weddings can be funny: in an interview with Decider, she said, “I think there’s so much comedy to be mined in weddings. It’s such a strange, stressful time for so many people. I kind of think comedy and weddings should have merged more seamlessly sooner, but I’m very glad to be the person who did it in the TV space. Obviously, there have been plenty of funny wedding movies.”
It’s great to watch a show about weddings where everyone is keeping their sense of humor since emotions are high and people often get very upset.
Simplify It All
Jamie Lee shared in an interview with Brides.com that it’s alright if couples feel like their wedding day isn’t full of shock and awe.
Lee said, “Your wedding is going to be really fun because it’s yours. You get to see everybody you love, and there’s attention on you that maybe you don’t have on a daily basis. But if you’ve been to a wedding, you’re not going to be shocked at the experience. I think it’s okay to prepare yourself for that. Some of it is going to feel a little routine.”
Lee also shared that couples should ensure there is lots of food at the wedding, that it’s a fun “big party,” and that it doesn’t make sense to spend extra money on something that won’t even matter.
