When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle first told their proposal story in their engagement interview in 2017, they gave an abbreviated version of what happened.
Harry shared that he popped the question on “just a standard, typical night for us.” Meghan then added, “Just a cozy night, it was—what were we doing? Roasting chicken and… And it was just—just an amazing surprise, it was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee.”
“I was like, ‘Can I say yes now?'” Meghan recounted.
“It was a really nice moment, it was just the two of us and I think I managed to catch her by surprise as well,” Harry said.
Now, five years later, in their new Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan about their love story, the two are sharing even more details of the early days of their relationship—and the full proposal story. Turns out, Meghan wasn’t that surprised, and though many assumed that because they said the proposal happened while they were roasting chicken, it took place inside—in fact, it took place in Kensington Palace’s north garden.

“I did pop a bottle of champagne while she was greasing a chicken,” Harry said. “And that slightly gave the game away. She was like, ‘You don’t drink champagne. What’s the occasion?’ I was like, ‘I don’t know, just had it laying around here, whatever.'”
She then sent a video to her friend, Jess, who is presumably Jessica Mulroney. In the video, which plays in the episode, Meghan says, “Oh my God, Jess. It’s happening…. Oh my God. He told me not to peek.”
“In the north garden being over looked by the staff flats, I got 15 of those electric candles,” Harry recounts of his proposal set up. “Of course I got down on one knee. Of course I did.” Meghan recounts, “He’s down on one knee and I was just like, ‘Yes!’ I was just so joyful and excited. I was like ‘Ah, we’re doing this.'”

“They were so happy,” Meghan’s friend, Lucy Fraser, says later on in the episode. “And they were gonna keep it quiet because it was gonna be announced a few weeks later. We had a little engagement party and everyone was dressed in animal onesies. And Meghan and Harry were in matching penguin onesies.”
